Honda have announced they’ll be returning to F1 (again) with McLaren (again) from 2015 onwards.

This will be great news for all nostalgists, evoking the emotional connections with the Senna/Prost McLaren-Honda days – just as the announcement last year of Williams re-partnering with Renault (and how is that going?).

F1 has been going through a bit of a nostalgic identity crisis of late; with 43 teams calling themselves Lotus, Mercedes being ‘back’ and stats adding to their pole positions of the fifties. Soon Torro Ross will be rebranding as Minardi.

The truth is that for real nostalgia, McLaren are currently reliving their mid nineties Mark Blundell/Nigel Mansell era – one of embarrassment and head scratching. And quite how happy Jenson Button will be climbing back into a Honda is unknown, he did languish at the back of the grid in a hippy car for too long with them…

And the timing does mean that Mercedes will be supplying one of the new era-engines to McLaren for only a year and will be surely trying to hide everything lest Honda get an advantage for the next year. So don’t be expecting McLaren to be getting to the top of the scoresheets for a while…

Well it’s good to see that our podcast has such incredible heft in the F1 world as today Caterham have announced that they are rehiring Heikki to drive in Friday Practice (and we’d hazard to guess much more in later races).

So as we have such heft we should use, abuse and ultimately get in trouble for it – what else would you like us to change in F1?

So Sebastian Vettel is an unsportsmanlike selfish little shit? I'm not sure who is really surprised at this, but Mark Webber's lack of his famed grit disappoints

So Sebastian Vettel is an unsportsmanlike selfish little shit? I’m not sure who is really surprised at this. Sunday’s Malaysian Grand Prix was the final nail in that particular proof coffin, but it’s been clear for the last few years that he’ll do whatever it takes to win, mostly behind the scenes and away from the cameras and broadcast team radio.

In disobeying team orders he has taken another step towards the legacy of that other unsportsmanlike selfish little shit, Michael Schumacher, who in his prime would gladly punt a driver off to win a world championship or park a car at the end of the Monaco lap to screw other drivers chances of qualifying (to name but two).

A team order is an uncomfortable factor of Formula One but whether allowed or disallowed they are as much a component as wheel nuts and lame PRspeak. The team is in control and they answer to sponsors and the moneymen, they employ the drivers and ultimately have longer terms goals to shoot for. As sickening as that all might feel to pure crux of racing it’s just how it is.

But there are two types of team orders, the most contentious is when a driver is asked to move over to let his team mate win – painful for the ego and detrimental to any kind of doubt in pecking order. Sunday’s team order to not try and overtake your team mate is more about keeping the status quo, turn down the wick and get the cars home.

But Vettel is, as covered earlier, an unsportsmanlike selfish little shit, his earlier radio message extolling Webber for being too slow and to get him to move over says it all, he thinks he’s better than Mark (and three championships and numerous stats might agree with him) and I’m sure that having to hold station made seb sick in his helmet.

So he went for it, like a ‘racer’. We have since found out that as they were on fuel saving mode and coasting to the end it was an unfair fight that Mark wasn’t expecting – they diced and parried for a few corners but then Vettel was in the lead and game over?

Webber flicked the bird to show just how angry he was with his team mate, but that was kind of it. We can’t go into the telemetry of whether Webber was capable of taking Vettel back, and unless Vettel had to aggressively tyre/fuel save near the end in equally matched cars he probably couldn’t – but to the casual TV viewer it’s hard to see why. It looked like the playground bully had done it again, Mark was soaking his balaclava with tears knowing a win was too good to be true.

Mark Webber’s twitter handle is @AussieGrit, and on the podium interview he seemed fired up for a fight, but since then has calmed down somewhat and despite blogs and newspapers banging on about this little fight is over. If he really was full of grit he should have punched Vettel on the podium and told the worlds media that Seb is an unsportsmanlike selfish little shit and keep banging that drum until the chants of “He likes Little Britain, he’s so funny!” are finally drowned out. Instead Mark has let the perceived world order at Red Bull cement that little bit harder into reality.

Vettel won’t be penalised, Red Bull will make the right noises about thinking he was wrong, but as we head to the next race Vettel got the full whack of points as Alonso crashed out, and the number crunchers at Red Bull will be just fine with that.
